Scheduled Monuments

Welcome to our collection of visiting guides for industrial heritage sites that are Scheduled Monuments. Scheduled Monuments are nationally important archaeological sites or historic buildings given legal protection by the UK government to preserve their cultural significance.

Once a site is scheduled, any work that might affect it including excavation, demolition, or even repair requires special Scheduled Monument Consent from the relevant authority.

Scheduling is our oldest form of heritage protection, which began in 1913, although its can trace its origins back to the 1882 Ancient Monuments Protection Act. Whether you’re a heritage enthusiast or a curious traveler, these guides will help you discover some of the UK’s industrial Scheduled Monuments.
